With the large postwar arrival of Lithuanians not speaking English, a Lithuanian language newspaper became essential, and so the idea of a weekly paper was born.
The Lithuanian Canadian R.C. Cultural Society "Žiburiai" was formed for this purpose. With no central facilities available, Fr. Ažubalis allowed the fledgling paper to use the basement of the rectory into which were crammed the linotypes, editorial and administrative areas.
In 1956, an addition was built adjoining the rectory to provide more of the desperately needed space. In 1974, the newspaper moved into its new spacious facilities at Anapilis.
The first editor of the weekly was Dr. Adolfas Šapoka. He died in 1961 of a heart attack at the age of 55 and on his death was succeeded by Msgr. Dr. Pranas Gaida who retired in 2008 at the age of 94. He is now succeeded by Ramūnė Sakalas-Jonaitis and Česlovas Senkevičius.
